The IFRS covers the five local government areas of Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama, Shoalhaven and Wingecarribee and was opened in September 2011 as a result of recommendations made by the 2008 Report of the Special Commission of Inquiry into Child Protection Services in NSW. The report found that families experiencing difficulties, and workers such as teachers, nurses, counsellors, psychologists, community workers and police should be better assisted in linking with local services.
Funded by NSW Health, the service aims to help families access the support they need before problems escalate and become child protection issues. Families are provided with telephone and face-to-face services and referred to services such as child care, housing, parenting education, drug and alcohol or mental health services, youth support and respite care.
