On the 1st January 2009 all Council sports grounds and playgrounds became Smoke Free Zones. This means that smoking is no longer permitted: On and around all Council sports grounds or Within 10 metres around all Council playgrounds. This ban complements the existing NSW legislation that prohibits smoking in enclosed public places. The introduction of smoke free sports grounds and playgrounds will increase community protection against smoking related illnesses. It will also significantly improve the local environment by reducing the amount of cigarette butt litter generated at outdoor recreational areas across the City.
