The MCCI Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) Social Support Groups are structured to provide culturally appropriate activities and programs to inform, empower and resource older people from CALD backgrounds to make informed choices about living at home independently.
There is a Baltic States and European group that meet at Oak flats Community Hall on Mondays commencing at 9 :30 am and a Serbian group on Tuesdays at 9:30 am. There is a Greek Group that meets at the community hall at Albion Park on Tongara Road on Wednesdays at 9.30 am.
Activities include socialisation, board games , cards, information sessions on Health and well being and gentle excercises. People enjoy morning Tea, Lunch and Dessert for $7.50 plus $2.50 if transport is required! We go on outings and enjoy getting to know one another!
Aims of the Social Support Groups are to assist CALD clients to:
Stay at home and to be more independent in the community.
Maintain their nutritional, recreational, health and ageing needs.
Meet their language and cultural requirements.
Reduce social isolation and improve their well being.
Actively participate in the community.
The program is provided in a group environment and includes the following activities:
Hot lunches (culturally appropriate meals)
Interactive games and crafts
Outings and excursions
Educational and informational workshops
Health and wellbeing development
Information and referrals
Social Support Groups operate from Monday to Friday accross various locations throughout the Illawarra and Shoalhaven.
A small contribution fee applies to the service.
