Shellharbour is a City of about 65,000 people, located approximately 100 kilometres from the centre of Sydney, in the Illawarra region of New South Wales, Australia. Our 154 square kilometres span an area of great natural beauty, stretching west from the picturesque coastline to rolling pastures, against the majestic backdrop of the Illawarra escarpment.

The Shellharbour Local Government Area was formed in 1859. It achieved City status some 136 years later, on 1 January, 1996.

Our Vision is a to be a dynamic, responsive organisation working with the community to create a city we can all be proud of. Council is delivering the Vision through a Shellharbour Community Strategic Plan which conserves and enhances our natural and built environments; provides programs which foster a safe, healthy, informed and caring community; and builds a strong and diverse local economy for generations to come.

After a period of Administration, lasting three years, local government elections were held on 3 September 2011, where seven Councillors were elected to represent our City.
